FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Extreme Athlete Marshall Ulrich Selected for
Running Hall of Fame

March 21, 2013, Idaho Springs, CO — In honor of decades of unprecedented athletic achievements, Marshall Ulrich will be inducted next month into the Colorado Running Hall of Fame, which recognizes Colorado residents for their accomplishments and contribution to the sport of distance running. The state has the one of the highest concentrations of world and American record holders and Olympic and world championship medal winners. Past honorees have included Olympians Frank Shorter, Lorraine Moller, and Arturo Barrios.

Ulrich is the only person in the world to have completed the “triple crown” of extreme sports, achieving records and firsts not only in running, but also in mountaineering and adventure racing:

  • Finished more than 125 ultramarathons, averaging over 125 miles each
  • Climbed the Seven Summits, including Mt. Everest, all on first attempts
  • Completed 12 expedition-length adventure races

He’s best known for his hard-core endurance in severe conditions and over incredible distances. At the age of 57, he broke two transcontinental speed records when he ran 3,063.2 miles in 52.5 days, from San Francisco to New York, about which he wrote his book, “Running on Empty” (2011).

A record four-time winner of the Badwater Ultramarathon and still the record holder for the 146 miles from Badwater Basin to the summit of Mt. Whitney, Ulrich has crossed Death Valley on foot, in July, a record 25 times, including a self-contained, unaided solo; a “quad” of nearly 600 miles; and the first-ever self-supported circumnavigation of Death Valley National Park, trekking 425 miles around the perimeter of the hottest place on earth during the hottest month in history.

Ulrich is the only person ever to have completed the Leadville Trail 100 and Pikes Peak marathon on the same weekend, and he has personal bests of 202 miles in 48 hours, 142 miles in 24 hours, 100 miles in 15:28, and 50 miles in 6:19.

In addition to being a remarkable athlete, Ulrich is also an accomplished speaker, author, trainer, and guide. He has raised more than $850,000 for various charities, including the Religious Teachers Filippini, sisters who provide an education to women and children in some of the poorest countries in the world.

The Colorado native has deep connections in the state: he was born in Greeley in 1951; was raised on a dairy farm in Kersey; graduated from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley; lived, raised a family, and still owns a business in Fort Morgan; and currently lives with his wife, Heather, in Idaho Springs.

He will be honored along with other “class of 2013” inductees Doug Bell, Nancy Hobbs, Jay Johnson, Lidia Simon, and Jane Welzel on Wednesday, April 10, at the Denver Athletic Club at 6:00 p.m. Tickets are available at corunninghalloffame.com.
