DNA Aconcagua Jan 15 Update – Summit Push Begins

The DNA group has started their summit push! At 11 am this morning, Jan 15, 2010, the 11 DNA climbers, along with Marshall Ulrich and four local guides from Aymara Expeditions left base camp/Plaza de Mulas on the first leg of their push for the summit, the trek to Camp 1/Canada. Everyone was excited, if a bit nervous, to get going. The climbers are all well trained, prepared, and equipped for the challenge ahead.

After a couple of inches of snow last night, the day broke clear and sunny, with the snow only adding to the beauty and the definition of the surrounding mountains. The group was in good spirits and in good health, even Gary who had faced a few stomach and intestinal issues. We were VERY pleased that the entire group got to head out together today, leaving just me (Heather) here in base camp to continue managing communications. The plan is for me to communicate with Marshall via radio at 7 pm local time (3 pm in CO) to get an update for the day about how the group did. Then, I will write and update and, technology willing (as always), provide another update for all of you following along at home before I call it a day. Then, tomorrow Jan 16 I probably will not post another update until later in the evening, after I get another radio update from Marshall about how day two of the summit push – the trek from Camp 1 to Camp 2/Nido goes.

Before leaving this morning the climbers DID get all of your comments/messages that you posted here on the blog. They were so very happy to hear your words of encouragement, support, and love from home – and send warm thoughts, thanks, and love back to all of you.

THANKS for following along and supporting the DNA group on Aconcagua!
